Birds of the World Lesson

Did you know that there are nearly 10,000 unique species of birds found across the world?

With so many different types of birds, it is no surprise that this flying animal can be found on all 7 of Earth’s continents. Inhabiting so many parts of the world has led to birds developing some very interesting adaptations in order to thrive in such different environments. For example, penguins have adapted to hold their breath for up to 20 minutes for swimming, while emus have evolved to be flightless and instead are expert runners. These great differences in form and ability between each species are why birds are such a captivating animal to study!

The Importance of Sea Ice

Brrr!

Sea ice covers around 15% of our world’s oceans at any given time. With such a substantial area of coverage, it is no surprise that sea ice is actually incredibly important to maintaining the balance needed to keep all of our planet’s ecosystems healthy.

The melting of sea ice can have far-reaching impacts such as changing weather patterns, altering ocean tides, and rising sea levels, which can all result in ecosystem disturbances that may harm animal life. We must act now to prevent these potential outcomes from occurring!

Refer to the guide below to understand more about why it is critical that we prevent further warming and loss of sea ice.

Types of Rocks Worksheet

Did you know that there are 3 main types of rocks?

The 3 main rock categories that scientists use are igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling of molten lava, while sedimentary rocks form in layers as a result of mineral particles settling or precipitating out of water or air. Meanwhile, metamorphic rocks form from pre-existing rocks that change due to heat or pressure.

Many rocks have uses that are surprisingly common in our everyday lives. For example, though you may have never heard of it, rhyolite is used for jewelry and road construction. All of these rocks can be categorized into the 3 main types mentioned above.

Download the following resource to learn more about the different rocks and what they are used for. For extra practice, write down any interesting facts you discover about each type!

Animal Food Webs Lesson

In the natural world, it is eat or be eaten! For most animals, both are the case.

A great way to illustrate how every creature is connected based on what it eats and what eats it is by constructing a food web. A food web can help us label the predators and prey that make up each of our Earth’s ecosystems.

Knowing how the food web works can give us a better understanding of how deeply interconnected all of the plants and animals are in our natural habitats. The missing presence of one creature is enough to throw off this delicate balance of connections, which is why it is critical that we work to prevent the extinction of our plants and animals. By working towards a sustainable future, we can save the world, one animal species at a time!

Two Degrees of Global Warming: What it Means for the Earth

When the temperature rises by 2°C, we may not feel much of a difference. However, for average temperatures over time, this seemingly small change matters a lot for our planet!

Did you know that with an increase in temperature of just two degrees, 99% of our coral reefs will decline? Or that more than 400 million people will be forced to live without adequate water?

Why do these worrisome effects, and many more, occur with “just” an increase of 2°C? When average temperatures shift by even a small amount, this means that we are more likely to experience temperature extremes! This is why it is so important to advocate for climate-positive change to prevent the Earth from reaching this critical threshold. In order to reach this goal, we must all work together to help protect our planet.

Consult the resource below to gain a better understanding of why it is so important that we work towards preventing global warming from reaching 2°C.
