Types of Rocks Worksheet

Did you know that there are 3 main types of rocks?

The 3 main rock categories that scientists use are igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling of molten lava, while sedimentary rocks form in layers as a result of mineral particles settling or precipitating out of water or air. Meanwhile, metamorphic rocks form from pre-existing rocks that change due to heat or pressure.

Many rocks have uses that are surprisingly common in our everyday lives. For example, though you may have never heard of it, rhyolite is used for jewelry and road construction. All of these rocks can be categorized into the 3 main types mentioned above.
