The 3 Types of Rocks Fact Sheet

Sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic! What do these three categories mean when it comes to different types of rocks?

Each type of rock is unique in the way that it is formed, and at which point it can be located within the rock cycle. Due to these differences in formation, each type is also used for distinct purposes by humans. For example, we might find igneous rocks used for curling stones, while metamorphic rocks are commonly used to make roof tiles. Can you think of any other everyday objects that might utilize each type of rock?

The Role of Glaciers

Did you know that glaciers make up 10% of the Earth’s total land area? With such a significant portion of the Earth being covered by glaciers, it is important to learn about how they form!

Glaciers act as a protective layer over much of the Earth. One main benefit that glaciers provide to us is that they reflect much of the sunlight back, keeping our planet cooler. As our glaciers melt due to climate change, our planet starts to warm more as a result. Melting glaciers also contribute to rising sea levels, erosion of land, and extreme weather events. It is no wonder why we must act urgently to protect our glaciers from the effects of climate change!

Ocean Currents Activity

Did you know that sea ice melting in the Arctic can cause the weather to change in every corner of the globe? This is because of our global ocean current patterns!

As global warming increases, melting sea ice can cause sea levels to rise and ocean currents to slow. The consequence of this change in the global currents is that weather patterns also start to shift across the world! Some regions may get warmer, while others get colder.

Preventing extreme changes in weather patterns across the world is just one more reason why we need to work together to prevent climate change!
