This creative short course introduces students to the wonders of Antarctica through art, with a focus on macaroni penguins and the majestic albatross. Over the course of a week, students will design and craft macaroni penguin finger puppets, and also learn how to sketch an albatross mid-flight, exploring artistic techniques such as texture, movement, and composition. Through hands-on activities, they’ll not only learn about these fascinating animals but also discover how art can capture the beauty of nature in an engaging and expressive way.
Join us on an Antarctic adventure! We’ll begin with a video showcasing the macaroni penguins and albatrosses in their natural habitat, focusing on their distinctive movements and behaviours. Students will then dive into hands-on activities, starting with sketching a magnificent albatross in flight. Using shading and line techniques, they’ll capture the elegance of this bird as it soars through the sky.
Next, students will craft their own macaroni penguin finger puppets using simple materials like paper, markers, and fabric. Once the puppets are complete, the class will come together to put on a puppet show, sharing their artistic creations and newfound knowledge with younger children. This combination of sketching and puppet-making blends art with storytelling, helping students develop both their drawing skills and their ability to create engaging performances.
Students will sketch a detailed drawing of an albatross mid-flight, using shading and movement techniques to capture the bird’s grace. They will also craft macaroni penguin finger puppets using materials like coloured paper, felt, and markers. Once complete, students will write a short script and design a small stage to put on a puppet show for younger children, showcasing both their puppets and their storytelling skills.
Teachers will have access to detailed lesson plans aligned with Visual Arts curriculum standards, guiding students through both the sketching and puppet-making activities. These plans will encourage students to think critically about how art can represent movement, form, and story, making learning both fun and meaningful.
This course allows students to apply their artistic skills to real-world contexts by using their sketches and puppets to explain the life and behaviour of macaroni penguins and albatrosses. The hands-on approach of sketching and performance fosters both creativity and practical skills, while helping students connect deeply with the natural world.
By combining art, science, and storytelling, students will engage in a truly immersive learning experience, creating works of art they can be proud of while sharing their knowledge in creative and inspiring ways.
