The objective of So They Can’s Education Program is to achieve improved teaching and learning conditions in government primary schools...
So They Can is a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade accredited NGO, committed to empowering vulnerable children and their communities through education in Kenya and Tanzania.
As a global community, we know that education changes everything. Since 2009, So They Can has made it their mission to partner with schools, communities, stakeholders and donors to provide quality education for children living in poverty so they can break the cycle. They do this through improving learning conditions and infrastructure, teacher training and development, and inclusive, reciprocal partnerships with the community and in-country governments.
So They Can takes a holistic approach to improving the quality of education because they know that in order to make an impact, they need to focus on all aspects of education, governance and the environment. As a result, they’ve developed their Education and Enhancement Programs and Projects that they currently deliver across 47 government schools supporting over 30,000 children and their communities annually in Kenya and Tanzania.
So They Can’s Education Program focuses on the following 6 education areas to ensure the delivery of quality education:
1. Teacher training and professional development
2. Student wellbeing (feeding programs, access to clean water, hygiene and sanitation)
3. Development of school boards and management
4. Government partnerships
5. Community and stakeholder engagement
6. School infrastructure and resources
Their 3-Phase Development Model (Foundation, Core and Sustained) ensures that they deliver their projects ever-conscious of the need for sustainability and their exit. Over a 7-10 year development cycle, So They Can works closely with a community to understand their needs and implement projects that will best support them. Throughout the cycle, they develop relationships and ensure the transfer of knowledge and management skills to these communities to establish sustainability of the programs. This enables them to eventually shift to a governance role so that they can expand their focus and core resources to help other vulnerable communities.
By 2030, their goal is to partner with 60 schools throughout Kenya and Tanzania and to support 36,000 students annually through their Education and Enhancement Projects, so they can go on to lift up their communities and create positive change.
