About the Course

Join us on an artistic expedition to one of the world’s most fascinating environments—Antarctica. Over ten weeks, children will delve into a variety of creative projects inspired by Antarctica’s rare beauty and unique ecosystem. From designing water-inspired crafts to illustrating icy landscapes, this course combines creativity, curiosity, and conservation in equal measure.

What is this Course About?

This course invites children to learn about Antarctica’s unique environment and wildlife through creative expression.

Students will:

Explore themes of environmental conservation through art.

Learn about topics like the water cycle, states of matter, and animal adaptations in an artistic context.

Develop skills in creative storytelling, design, and artistic techniques like shading, collage-making, and animation.

Each child will be encouraged to think critically and creatively, culminating in projects that not only express what they’ve learned but also inspire others to appreciate and protect the planet.

Topics We’ll Cover

Throughout this course, students will engage with a wide variety of topics, including:

The Water Cycle: Creating artistic representations of water’s journey through the environment.

States of Matter: Crafting collages to showcase solids, liquids, and gases.

Wildlife Puppetry: Designing finger puppets inspired by Antarctic animals like macaroni penguins.

Futuristic Designs: Imagining and designing watercraft based on animal adaptations.

Colour Values and Landscapes: Drawing icebergs using shading and gradient techniques.

Patterns in Nature: Exploring pointillism and the natural designs found in Antarctica.

Storytelling through Art: Creating picture books to share the wonders of Antarctica with others.

Stop Motion Animation: Bringing Antarctica to life through animated films.

What Will We Create?

This course is hands-on and filled with opportunities to create:

Creative Projects: Students will design watercraft, puppets, collages, and much more.

Sketches: Each week, students will create sketches to refine their artistic skills as Jordon guides them through the artworks and techniques required to capture the Antarctic region.

Stop Motion Films: By the end of the course, students will produce an animated short film inspired by Antarctica’s landscapes and wildlife.

Weekly Lesson Plans

Teachers and parents will have access to ten meticulously crafted lesson plans that can be adapted to suit local curricula and educational guidelines. Each plan is designed to maximise learning through hands-on activities and real-world connections.

Real World Learning

This course isn’t just about art—it’s about making a difference.

  • Conservation Awareness: Students will learn how their art can inspire others to care for the environment.
  • Practical Application: Concepts like the water cycle, animal adaptations, and patterns in nature will be linked to real-world scenarios.
  • Inspiring Change: Through their creations, students will raise awareness about the importance of protecting Antarctica and its fragile ecosystems.

Art in Antarctica is more than just a course—it’s an adventure into creativity, environmental stewardship, and the wonders of the natural world. By the end of these ten weeks, students will have a collection of projects that reflect their learning and inspire action for a better future.

Everything we do at Upschool:

Real-World Learning

We take 'real-world' to the next level by designing projects with 'real' outcomes.

Entrepreneurship With Purpose

We want to teach the entrepreneurs of tomorrow to operate with purpose and ethics.

Team Players & Collaborators

Our projects bring children, teachers and communities together to work towards a common goal.

Creativity & Problem Solving

We inspire creative thinking and dynamic problem solving. These are the skills for tomorrow.

Skill Based Learning

From graphic design & film making to creative writing and storytelling (and everything in between)

“It has been a privilege for our children to be a part of the initial Upschool program focussing on creating a Changemaking Community.  Our students have been engaged from the outset, and we have seen a measurable improvement in not only their literacy skills but also in their empathy towards others and their understanding of how to connect to communities both locally and abroad. The resources that are provided are outstanding and have kept our students motivated towards their goals.

It has transformed the way that we approach teaching within the school, giving our students an authentic purpose and opportunity to make a real world difference.

As a school we are committed to the work that Upschool is doing and are looking forward to our next work with them.”
Daniel Frew (Principal, Lower Plenty Primary School, Melbourne)

It’s 100% free – yes. Nothing to pay to be involved.

We have 5 year old children right through to adults participating. It’s differentiated and open to everyone.

Either. Whole school engagement is the best way to have maximum impact, but it certainly can be done by one class or by one year level. You can even use it as an extension program for a small number of students too if that works for you.

No, not at all. Individuals (adults and children) can go through the course.
