This captivating short course invites students into the stunning world of Antarctica’s icy landscape through a creative and artistic lens. Over a week, students will learn how to draw and paint an iceberg, using the concept of colour values to create depth and movement. They will experiment with mixing various shades of blue and white, inspired by the awe-inspiring scenes of Antarctica. Alongside this, they’ll sketch the powerful form of an elephant seal, adding realism to their art through shading and texture.
Get ready for an exciting artistic adventure! We’ll kick off with a live video from Antarctica, where Gavin and Jordan from Young Art USA will introduce you to a breathtaking, newly formed iceberg. You’ll learn how artists choose colours and techniques to evoke feelings and tell stories, then apply these ideas to create your iceberg masterpiece.
Students will explore the art of using a monochromatic scale, learning to balance light and dark shades to capture the true essence of an iceberg. To top it off, Jordan will teach students how to draw an elephant seal, using expert tips to master shading and texture. Once completed, students will exhibit their artwork in a school gallery, with some pieces auctioned to raise money for charity.
Students will first paint an iceberg using a range of blue hues, showing how most of the iceberg remains hidden beneath the water. Next, they’ll draw a majestic elephant seal, focusing on capturing its powerful form through detailed shading. Once finished, students will display their artwork in a school exhibition, creating promotional posters to encourage attendance and excitement.
To get everyone excited about our gallery and auction, we’ll need to spread the word! Students will design eye-catching posters to promote the event. Using their artistic skills and creativity, they’ll create vibrant and informative posters that capture the attention of parents, teachers, and the wider school community. Gavin will share an example to get the inspiration flowing, and then it’s over to the students to make posters that shout, “Come and see our amazing Antarctic art and support a great cause!”
Teachers will have access to detailed plans aligned with curriculum standards in visual arts and English, guiding students step-by-step through painting icebergs and drawing elephant seals. Lessons include vocabulary development, discussions on artistic decisions, and opportunities for students to present and reflect on their work.
This course seamlessly combines art, science, and technology, allowing students to apply their skills in a meaningful context. They’ll learn how artists interpret the natural world and have the chance to use their creativity for a good cause, making art that inspires and makes a difference.
